13. Day 9 - Carrion to Sahagun.

Another great breakfast of bacon and eggs and we are on our way again. A bit later this morning and although we know it will get hot we only have 40k to do, so we grab a couple of things from the supermarket and start riding at 10.30. After a few k on the road we hop onto a good surface on the track and cover 21k without any fuss in an hour and a quarter. A quick coffee and snack and we are off again, on the track to start with then on the road which is very quiet and runs alongside the track. For a change our hotel is very easy to find and we do the last 19k again in an hour and a quarter.
So might assume this was a flat ride and you'd be right. The only challenge was that the temperature reached 37C during the last hour and by any standards this was a very easy day. So we have had two very relaxing days but tomorrow take on 60 k to Leon. It will be flat but it will also be HOT, so we will see how we pull up tomorrow night. Oh and yes we have passed half way with only 364k to go!!! The ride today was mostly through acres and acres of wheat fields.  We saw quite a few houses built into the cliffs - a bit like what we know as rammed earth houses. Many storks have made their nests on top of chimneys. My Spanish vocabulary is limited but getting me by and has been entirely taught to me from Tinashe whose source has been Dora the Explorer! Havnt seen the "barrow man" today but suspect that he may be way ahead of us. We saw a couple riding a tandem bike today but think that it would test our relationship beyond its limits so dont think we will try it!  Sahagun has a large monastry, The Benedictine Monasterio Real de San Benito who have existed here since the 9th century. We are heading off now to find it.

  1. Yesterday we took our Grandies to a skateboard lesson at Frankston skate park. Spoke to another grandparent about your journey, as well as the barrow man. He couldn't believe your efforts and liked the story of the barrow man, as we do. Don't forget the sunscreen. Marg x
